Question

1) What should one do when one has finished reading the Quran? 2) What kind of dua should one read? 3) If one wants what one has read. The “swab” one has received when reading the Quran should go to a person who is dead or to a sick person, what should one say then? Hope you can help me with the answers.

Respond

Assalamu alaikum,

Thank you for your inquiry.

1 and 2) You do not necessarily need to do anything special other than thanking Allah for giving you the opportunity (tawfiq) and honor of reciting His holy words.

However, you can recite various duas to ask Allah for His blessings and forgiveness. A common dua that should be recited after reciting the Quran is found at the end of most printed copies of the Quran and is called “Dua Khatm al-Quran”. This prayer comes in two versions, one slightly shorter than the other. The short one should be recited after each recitation of the Quran, and both should be recited after the entire Quran has been recited.

Please click here to download these duas. In addition, you can also pray in your own words for whatever you wish – for yourself, your parents, siblings, relatives and all other Muslims.

3) You can send the reward (thawab) by reciting the Quran to the deceased. Then, one first asks Allah for acceptance of what one has recited from the Quran. Then, dua is made that Allah sends the reward for the recitation first to our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), then to all previous prophets (peace be upon them all), followed by the Prophet’s family, his wives, his companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) and all other Muslims who have passed away until today.

Finally, you mention the person you want to send the reward to and then conclude with some other selected verses from the Quran and/or hadith.

One should also conclude by praying for the healing of the sick by His grace and by the blessing (barakah) of the Quran.

And Allah knows best.

Wassalam
