Islamic sources do not tell much about Sayyidah Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her) who was the daughter of Zam’ah, belonging to the Quraish tribe. Her mother’s name was Shamoos, who also belonged to a respected tribe. After the death of Sayyidah Khadija (may Allah be pleased with her), the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was very sad and depressed. When Khaula, who was married to a companion, noticed this, she mentioned Sayyidah Aisha and Sayyidah Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with both of them) to the Prophet (peace be upon him), with a view to marriage. After a short time, the Prophet (peace be upon him) married Sayyidah Aisha.
Islamic sources do not tell us much about Sayyidah Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her) who was the daughter of Zam’ah, of the Quraish tribe. Her mother was named Shamoos, who also belonged to a respected tribe.
A few days after this marriage, the Prophet (peace be upon him) married Sayyidah Sawdah, who was a widow of almost 50 years. The main motive behind this marriage was to take care of the daughters of Sayyidah Khadija, namely Sayyidah Umme Kulthoom and Sayyidah Fatima (may Allah be pleased with them both). Despite this, the Prophet (peace be upon him) took good care of her rights, which led to both of them living a harmonious life in each other’s company.
Sayyidah Sawdah was previously married to her cousin, Sukraan ibn Amr. He was a strong opponent of Islam and the Muslims, and he mocked and ridiculed the Muslims as did the majority of the population of Makkah.
After Sayyidah Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her) came to know the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet, she showed great interest and respect for Islam. Sukraan’s denial of this truth was very difficult and difficult for her, and she kept her belief hidden, however, after a short period of time Islam began to affect Sukraan, and eventually led to both of them reverting to Islam.
Later, Sukraan ibn Amr died of illness about five years before the Hijrah. His death occurred while the Muslims were fleeing due to the suffering inflicted on them by the opponents of Islam in Makkah. After his death, Sayyidah Sawdah returned to Makkah, where conditions had improved.
The marriage with the Prophet (peace be upon him) was concluded about three years before the hijrah. They lived together for three years in Makkah, before the Prophet (peace be upon him) migrated to Madinah. At that time, Madinah was a small village called Yathrab. The word meant bad and miserable in Arabic. As its name suggests, this village had a very bad and dirty atmosphere. This led to diseases being prevalent in the village. The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave the village a new name, Madinah, which means city. And eventually, this village was indeed transformed into a city with the blessings of Allah. The atmosphere changed from bad and miserable to good and pleasant.
From Madina, the Prophet (peace be upon him) sent Zaid ibn Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) to Makkah to fetch Sayyidah Sawdah and the other members of her family. Sayyidah Sawdah then came along with her two daughters, Sayyidah Umme Kulthum and Hadhrat Fatimah, to the ideal of humanity.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) and Sayyidah Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her) had no children together, but from a previous marriage she had a son, Abdur Rahman, who was martyred in the Battle of Faras.
After the hijrah, Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) moved into the home of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Several Islamic sources narrate that both wives of the Prophet had a good relationship with each other despite the great age difference. Sayyidah Sawdah is known for her magnificent personality. She was obedient, respectful and funny. This eminent personality died around 22 A.H. in Madina. It was during the last period of Hadhrat Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) as Caliph.
Hadhrat Sawdah is attributed with five hadiths, one of which is in the Bukhari collection. The Sahaba who have quoted her are Abdullah ibn Abbas, Abdullah ibn Zubair and Yahya ibn Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with them all).
